What is BIS Registration/Certification in India?

BIS is an acronym that stands for Bureau of Indian Standards. BIS is India's National Quality Certification Agency, which permits manufacturers to produce, import, and sell products that need to meet these Quality Standards. Why is it necessary to obtain BIS Certification in India?


The government of India requires manufacturers of various products to have a BIS certificate to produce and sell their goods in India. Once they have obtained their BIS certificate/license, the manufacturer can utilize Standard Mark (ISI Mark) on their products. ISI Mark is considered the symbol of safety and trust for customers in India. What is a BIS Certificate for Import?


Bureau of Indian Standards provides manufacturing licenses for Domestic (Indian manufacturing companies) and foreign manufacturers. Many traders, importers, and distribution companies in India that purchase and import products that foreign companies produce outside of India. According to the government's regulations, these goods made by foreign producers require a mandatory BIS certification for import into India. BIS gives licenses to foreign companies under two significant schemes based on the nature of the product.

What is Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme?


Bureau of Indian Standards provides BIS licenses to foreign manufacturers under the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme. Foreign Manufacturers Certification Department (FMCD) is the official authority for the certification of BIS, which manages the FMCS. Foreign manufacturers who want to get an FMCS license must assign the designation of an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) who can carry out the entire certification process and the necessary documentation. Once they have obtained a BIS license, the foreign manufacturer can use the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) on their products.


What is a Compulsory Registration Scheme?


In 2012 The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), in conjunction with the Bureau of Indian Standards, introduced the Compulsory Registration Scheme. Under the BIS CRS scheme, the Electronics and IT products producers must get the BIS license to import, manufacture and market their goods in India. This scheme covers 76 items. If a company fails to get a BIS license but still manufactures and introduces its product to the market, it could be considered an offense and lead to huge penalties and even imprisonment.
